Giant's Causeway, located in Northern Ireland, consists of over 40,000 interlocking hexagonal columns beginning at the mountainside and continuing down into the sea, rising again on the other side of the channel in Scotland. Legend has it that this was the work of an Irish and Scottish giant. However, geologists claim that this phenomenon was caused by an ancient volcano spewing liquid basalt, which, when quickly cooled, crystallized into giant hexagons. Whichever theory you believe, you will still be amazed by these massive and nearly symmetrical rocks.
