Machu Picchu was built around 1430 but abandoned about 100 years later. Because of its remote location, 8,000 feet above sea level, high in the Andes jungle, it was never discovered and destroyed by the Spanish conquistadores. Machu Picchu was rediscovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham. As shown in the historical photo below, aside from clearing away the 500 years of vegetation, the ruins are more or less in the condition they were discovered in which is also the same condition they were abandoned in.
